Forward Coupar Angus Food and Growing projects have been evolving since 2010, when starting out as Coupar Angus Food Focus.

The project maintains three principal aims focusing upon encouraging the people of Coupar Angus to:

  • Grow and use more Local Produce
  • Eat Better and live better
  • Cook Better

Much of our Community Growing projects have in recent years been supported by the Scottish Government Climate Challenge Fund, where we focus on promoting sustainable local food production and hosting growing mentoring sessions.

Our first Community Garden was created at Caddam Road in 2014. Since then this garden has developed and become a thriving accessible growing area used regularly by community members. Our Market Garden was established in 2018 as a component within the Climate Challenge Fund awarded project grant, which is supported by volunteers who have formed the Coupar Angus Food and Growing group.

A number of other Community Growing spaces have been created in Coupar Angus, including the Market Garden upon the Bogside Road, that throughout the growing season provides high quality vegetables and other produce to the community at affordable cost. We also supply a number of local shops and hold a once weekly veg shack for people to buy fresh vegetable straight from the garden.

Encouraging people to enjoy, share and learn new cooking skills is an important part our work. Cooking for adults began with bread making classes and expanded to include other themes, which has included a wide range of cooking and soup making events, tasting demonstrations and competitions for both adults and children.

Cooking for children takes place in partnership with Coupar Angus Youth Activities Group (CAYAG) and in recent years has included school holiday cookery sessions, that we hope to continue in the future. These comprise weekly Youth Group sessions run by CAYAG in the Y Hall with the Community Garden holding outdoor cooking sessions at the Caddam Road Community Garden during the summer months. A series of pop-up meals, food and growing events and workshops including fabric dyeing using plants are features at indoor and outdoor sessions.

Coupar Angus Food and Growing initiatives have links with many local producers and growers, that focuses upon projects that can form strong relationships to enable local people acess food at affordable prices. Events such as our autumn apple pressing encourage community members to bring along fruit and take home apple juice, which not only makes nutritious drinks, but also helps reduce food waste.

We hold a weekly Veg Shack stall at the market garden during the growing season. Do pop in to see us for nice fresh veg from Late April to early November.
